The heart is a hollow muscle divided into two parts, the left heart and the right heart, which are separated by a wall. In fact it acts as a double pump to ensure a double circulatory system in the body.

The blood first travels through the pulmonary circulation: the blood leaves the right heart and is carried by the pulmonary arteries to the lungs, returning to the left heart via the pulmonary veins.

The blood then enters general circulation: contractions of the left heart propels it into the aorta, towards all of the body’s organs. It returns from the organs to the right heart by way of the vena cavae.

Capillaries provide a zone of exchange in which the blood provides oxygen and nutrients to the organs, which in turn release carbon dioxide and other wastes into the blood.
